How many porta potties does OSHA require on a construction site?

OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51(c) requires 1 toilet for a crew of 20 or fewer workers. Crews over 20 need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Over 200 workers, the count is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. Those are legal minimums. A clean jobsite usually needs more units than the minimum.

41 to 80 workers2 seats and 2 urinals5 to 8 standard unitsWeekly, or fewer units twice weekly
200+ workers1 seat and 1 urinal per 501 unit per 10, or twice-weekly serviceTwice weekly

The legal minimum comes from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Our recommendation is not the law. It is based on 1 unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service.

Legal minimum versus what keeps a unit usable

A standard unit holds about 200 uses between services. Ten workers on a 40-hour week fill that in about a week, which is why we size at 1 unit per 10. Push 20 people onto one unit and it is full by Wednesday, even though OSHA counts it as enough.

Does a jobsite need a handwashing station?

OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities near the work when crews apply paint, coatings, herbicides or other harmful substances. Washing must let workers remove those substances, so hand sanitizer alone does not cover it. A portable handwashing station has 2 sinks, soap and paper towels, and needs no hookups.

Do I pay for a full month on a 3-day job?

A 3-day job does not have to pay for a full month. The short-job rate covers a standard unit for up to 7 days, starting at $145 with one service visit included. A roof tear-off, a foundation pour or a 4-day siding job fits that rate. Jobs that run past a week are cheaper on 28-day billing.

Two short-job weeks cost more than one 28-day cycle. If there is any chance the job runs into a second week, start on the monthly rate. Unsure how long it will run? Read how short-term rentals compare by length.

Where should the porta potty go on a jobsite?

A jobsite porta potty belongs on firm, level ground the service truck can reach within about 15 feet. Keep the unit out of the path of concrete trucks, dumpsters and lifts. Set it away from open trenches and roof edges. Text the gate code and a site contact so weekly service never gets skipped.

What the driver needs from you

  • The spot, marked with a cone, flag or a texted photo.
  • Gate code or lockbox location, and the hours the gate is open.
  • A site contact, usually the super or foreman, with a cell number.
  • Any low wires, trenches or soft fill near the spot.

A free lock hasp keeps the public out of units on open lots. More placement ideas are in where to put a porta potty.

How do contractor accounts and invoicing work?

Contractor accounts start with one paid rental on a card. After that, Shawn can bill your business on net-15 invoices, and approved accounts can pay by check. Each invoice can carry the job name or PO number. Contractors with steady work across several jobsites can ask for account pricing on long-term units.

Tax-exempt organizations send their certificate, and no sales tax is charged. One account can cover units on several jobs, each billed on its own 28-day cycle from its delivery day.

What changes on an Erie jobsite in winter?

Winter jobsite units in Erie get a non-freezing brine charge in the tank from November through March. The crew needs to keep a shoveled path to the door. Place the unit away from roof drip lines and where plows pile snow. Erie gets around 100 inches of lake-effect snow a season.

Wind on the bluffs. Units on open lots near the lake, on the bluffs or along the Bayfront should be staked or anchored. Lake Erie gusts can tip an empty unit. See the winter porta potty guide for snow placement.

What setup works for roofing, remodels and new homes?

Roofing, remodel and new home jobs each need a different porta potty setup. Roofers often need one unit for a few days. Remodels need a unit in the driveway so the crew stays out of the house. New home builds need a unit from the foundation to the final inspection, on monthly billing.

Roofing

A tear-off and reroof usually takes a few days. Use the 7-day rate, and set the unit clear of the drip edge and the dumpster drop zone.

Remodels and additions

One standard porta potty in the driveway keeps the crew out of your one working bathroom. Kitchen and bath remodels often run several weeks, so start on 28-day billing.

New home builds

Builders keep a unit from excavation to the certificate of occupancy. Add a second unit when framing, roofing and mechanical trades overlap. If the owner lives on-site in a camper, a flushing unit with a sink makes the months easier.

Jobsite porta potty questions

These are the jobsite questions that decide the order: how fast a unit arrives, what happens when the crew grows, and how pickup and billing end. Each answer starts with the direct fact. For OSHA details beyond the counts above, read our guide to Pennsylvania jobsite toilet rules.

Our regular supplier didn't show. Can you get one to the roofing job today?

Order by 11 a.m., Monday to Saturday, and the unit arrives the same day in Erie, Millcreek, Harborcreek, Fairview, Summit, Lawrence Park and Wesleyville with no rush fee. Elsewhere in Erie County same-day depends on the route and adds a flat $50 rush fee.

Can I give you the super's number so the driver finds the right spot?

Give us the site contact's cell number when you book. The driver texts that person about 30 minutes before arrival. The same contact hears from us if a gate is locked on a service day.

The crew doubles next month. Can I add units?

Call or text and Shawn adds units or switches to twice-weekly service. On a crowded site with little room, twice-weekly service can be the better fit. Each added unit starts its own 28-day cycle on the day it arrives.

Will you pick it up when the job is done?

Jobsite units stay until you ask. Text or call 1 business day before you want the unit gone. Billing continues every 28 days until you request pickup, so call before the next cycle date.

Do I pay a fee when you take the unit away?

There is no removal fee. The delivery and pickup charge on your first bill covers the round trip. Later cycles are the unit rate only, plus tax.

Who pays if a unit is tipped over or burned on the jobsite?

Vandalism, fire and graffiti are charged to the renter at repair or replacement cost. A free lock hasp and a spot in view of the street or the site camera help. Normal wear from a jobsite is not charged.

Is a standard unit enough for OSHA, or do I need the urinal count too?

Each standard unit has a toilet seat and a urinal inside. Your safety lead decides how the count applies to your crew. Our guide to OSHA porta potty requirements in Pennsylvania walks through it.
