How does a porta potty compare with your camper's black tank?
A standard porta potty holds about 60 gallons and handles roughly 200 uses between weekly services. Many camper black tanks are smaller and fill faster, because every flush adds water. A family of 4 living in a camper uses about 140 toilet trips a week, which one weekly-serviced unit handles.
| Question | Standard porta potty | Camper black tank |
|---|---|---|
| Tank size | About 60 gallons (approx.) | Varies by model. Check your owner's manual. |
| Uses before emptying | About 200 | Fewer, since flush water fills the tank too |
| Who empties it | Our crew, every week | You, at a dump station or with a hired pump-out |
| Water or power needed | None | Water for flushing |
| Winter | Non-freezing brine charge, November to March | Tank and lines need heat or winterizing |
The 140-trip figure assumes 4 people, about 5 trips each a day, for 7 days. Bigger families or visiting crews may need a second unit or a second weekly visit.

Can I rent a porta potty while living in a camper and building a house?
Families living in a camper while their house is built can rent a porta potty on the monthly rate, from $185 per 28 days with weekly service. The unit sits between the camper and the build, and the building crew can use it too. Billing stops when you call for pickup once the house bathroom works.
A flushing unit with a sink, from $325 per 28 days, feels more like home for kids and guests. A handwashing station from $145 per 28 days is another way to add soap and water outside.
Your builder may already need a unit for the crew under OSHA rules. One unit often covers both if the crew is small, so ask before you double up. Builder setups are explained on the construction site toilet page.
Placement next to a camper
Set the unit on firm, level ground, a short walk from the camper door and downwind of the windows. The truck needs to park within about 15 feet. Tell us where the septic field, well line and buried power run before delivery.
What do campgrounds and camp weekends need?
Campgrounds open for the season need units on weekly service at the monthly rate. A single camp weekend, church retreat or scout campout uses the event rate, from $165 per unit, dropped Friday and picked up Monday. Thirty campers over two days make about 300 trips, so plan 2 units or a $45 service visit.
A camp unit on the event rate shows up clean and gets no service visit unless you book one. Add a handwashing station near the cook area for any camp that serves food.
Campgrounds open all summer should see seasonal porta potty rentals for season pricing. For headcounts on a one-day gathering, use the porta potty calculator.

Can you deliver a porta potty to a hunting camp?
Hunting camps can get a porta potty when the truck can reach a firm spot within about 15 feet. On a firm, level path the crew can roll a unit up to about 75 feet with a dolly. Muddy two-track lanes and soft fields are the usual problem, so describe the road before you book.
Camps used from November on get the non-freezing brine charge so the tank does not freeze between visits. A free lock hasp keeps the unit closed while the camp sits empty during the week.
Camps in Crawford and Warren counties get next-day delivery as standard, with delivery and pickup from $99. Camps near the Allegheny side are covered on the Warren County delivery page.
Do you pump out RV holding tanks?
Shawn Rental Works does not pump private RV holding tanks as a standard service. Our weekly service pumps and cleans the units we rent. If your camper's black or gray tank needs emptying on-site, call to ask about pump-outs. Shawn will tell you on the call what can be done for your location.
Many people living on a lot skip the question by using the rented unit for the toilet and the camper only for showers and dishes. The camper's gray tank then fills much more slowly than a black tank would.
Camper and campground questions
These camper and campground questions cover daily use, family comfort, freezing weather, permits and when billing ends. Each answer starts with the fact. If you are living on-site, have the address, the number of people and a photo of the spot ready when you call Shawn.
How often will the unit need emptying with 4 people using it every day?
Once a week is enough for 4 people. That is about 140 trips a week against roughly 200 uses per service. With 6 or more people, or a crew using it too, add a second unit or a second weekly visit.
Will the porta potty freeze if we stay in the camper into December?
From November to March each unit gets a non-freezing brine charge in the tank. Keep a shoveled path to the door so the driver can service it. Our winter porta potty guide covers placement in lake-effect snow.
Do I need a permit for a porta potty on my building lot?
Your own building lot usually needs no permit for a unit. Living in a camper on the lot is a separate zoning question, so check with your township office before you move in.
Is a flushing unit worth it for a family?
A flushing unit has a foot-pump flush, a sink with soap and paper towels, and a mirror. For young kids or months on-site, many families find the extra cost worth it. The flush tank is refilled at each weekly service.
When does billing stop once our house bathroom works?
Give us 1 business day of notice by text or call before you want the unit gone. No new 28-day cycle starts after you ask for pickup, and there is no removal fee.
