How many restrooms does an industrial crew need?

An industrial crew doing construction or maintenance work needs at least the OSHA 1926.51 count: 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, then 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40. To keep units usable all week, we size at 1 unit per 10 workers on weekly service, or about 1 per 20 on twice-weekly service.

Minimums come from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Our counts are a recommendation, not the law. Handwashing column pairs 1 station with every 2 units on twice-weekly service.

Which OSHA rule applies to your site?

Contractor crews doing construction, demolition or turnaround work fall under 1926.51. Permanent plant staff fall under the general industry rule, 29 CFR 1910.141. Your safety manager decides which applies. We size the units to match.

How do restrooms work for a plant shutdown or turnaround?

A plant shutdown or turnaround packs a large crew into a short window, so restrooms need to arrive before day one and get serviced at least twice a week. Shawn sets the units the day before, schedules extra visits at $45 per unit, and pulls the extra units as the crew shrinks.

  • Up to a week: standard units on the 7-day rate, from $145, with 1 service visit. Add extra visits as needed.
  • Longer outages: standard units from $185 per 28 days with weekly service, plus a second weekly visit.
  • Night shift too: double shifts double the use. Plan on twice-weekly service even with a modest crew.

Send the crew ramp-up by day if you have it. Units can step down with 1 business day notice. Short jobs are compared in detail on the short-term rental page.

Where should restroom clusters go on a plant or yard?

Restroom clusters work best near the crew entrance, the break trailers and the parking area, on firm, level ground the service truck can reach. Keep clusters clear of forklift lanes, rail clearances and crane swing zones. Each cluster gets handwashing stations at the end and at least one wheelchair-accessible unit if the public uses it.

Tell us which gate the driver uses, the site contact, and any safety check-in before the first delivery. Text the gate code for service days.

Port and rail yards on the Erie bayfront

Open yards near the bay catch strong gusts off Lake Erie. Units there are staked or anchored. Gravel pads work well. Soft fill near the water does not.

Do utility and pipeline crews need a unit at every site?

Utility and pipeline crews that move every day may not need a unit at each stop. OSHA 1926.51(c)(4) exempts mobile crews with transportation readily available to nearby toilets. Crews that work one dig, pump station or staging yard for days need a unit there, moved as the work moves along the line.

A common setup is one or two units at the staging yard on monthly billing, plus a unit at any dig that lasts more than a day or two. Call to move a unit as the job advances. Rural lines in Crawford and Warren counties usually get next-day delivery.

Warehouses and offices on raw land follow the same idea: a unit near the door, on weekly service, until the building's own restrooms are working. A standard porta potty covers most of these.

How does invoicing work for plants and contractors?

Industrial accounts pay the first rental by card, then can move to net-15 invoices. Each invoice can carry your PO number, site name and job number. Approved accounts can pay by check. Tax-exempt buyers send a certificate once. Orders with 3 or more units take 10% off the units, and long-term contractors can ask about account pricing.

Industrial restroom questions

These industrial restroom questions cover the details purchasing and safety leads need before a PO is cut: paperwork, after-hours access, shift work, emergencies and adding units mid-job. Each answer starts with the fact. Jobsites outside a plant fence are covered on our construction page.

Can you put our PO number on every invoice?

Give us the PO number and site name when you book, and both go on every invoice for that order. Separate POs for separate areas of a plant can be billed as separate orders.

Can the driver service units before our shift starts?

Delivery and service run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Ask for an early stop and Shawn routes it as early as the day allows. Text the gate code so the driver does not wait at the guard shack.

Our building lost water. Can you get units here today?

Order by 11 a.m. and units arrive the same day in the Erie core zone with no rush fee. Elsewhere in Erie County, same-day delivery depends on the route and adds a flat $50. Add a handwashing station so staff can wash with soap.

Do we need handwashing stations on an industrial site?

OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities near work that involves paints, coatings or other harmful substances. Hand sanitizer does not remove those. We pair 1 station with every 2 units in a cluster.

Can we get units for a crew working on a construction project inside the plant?

Contractor projects inside a plant use the same setup as any jobsite. See our construction site toilet counts and billing, and Shawn can bill it to the contractor or the plant.
